FAQ: Chinese Courses & Programs at KCEL Kunming

Frequently Asked Questions — Courses & Programs

1. How long is each class, and how many classes will I have per day?

Each class is 45 minutes, followed by a 15-minute break. Most students choose a Half-day program (2 classes a day) or a Full-day program (4 classes a day), Monday to Friday. Classes are scheduled in morning and afternoon slots between 8:30am and 7:00pm. Because our lessons are one-on-one, the schedule is flexible and built entirely around you — students on a full-day plan often advance a full HSK level in a short time, and beginners sometimes more.

2. Are classes one-on-one or in a group?

Our core program is one-on-one private instruction. Your teacher works with you alone, so every lesson is focused entirely on your level, goals, and pace. Starting September 2026, we also offer small group classes for students who prefer a more social setting at a lower per-class price — see the next question.

3. Do you offer small group classes?

Yes! Small group classes return in September 2026. They run Monday–Friday, 9:00–11:00am (two back-to-back 45-minute classes with a 15-minute break), in groups of 3 to 6 students grouped by level using the standard HSK textbook series. A short level assessment beforehand places you in the right group.

As a launch offer, the inaugural September 2026 cohort is just $13 USD per 45-minute class — roughly $2,600 for the full 5-month cohort (about 200 classes, September 1, 2026 to the end of January 2027). The one-time registration fee is $100 USD, the same as one-on-one. Most students finish the cohort having advanced at least one full HSK level. Spots are limited to 6 per group. See the small group classes page →

If a group doesn't reach the 3-student minimum, you're upgraded to one-on-one classes at the same $13/class cohort rate — no extra charge.

4. How much do classes cost?

One-on-one classes: $15 USD per 45-minute class as a summer rate through August 31, 2026, then $18 USD per class from September 1, 2026.
Small group classes: $13 USD per class for the inaugural September 2026 cohort.
A one-time $100 USD registration fee applies to all programs. For payment methods and the enrollment steps, see How to Pay → and How to Join KCEL →.

5. Can I customize what we study in class?

Yes. One-on-one lessons are fully flexible — you are not locked into a fixed HSK syllabus. We build the plan around what you want to improve: HSK exam preparation, everyday conversation, business Chinese, reading the news, writing practice, pronunciation, or any mix. Tell your teacher your goals and we shape the curriculum to match.

6. Is there a deadline to register? Can I start anytime?

There is no registration deadline. You can enroll and start on any Monday, year-round. If you join a program that has already started, we provide free catch-up tutoring so you can get up to speed with the ongoing class.

7. I'm not sure of my Chinese level. How do I choose a program?

We provide a free language assessment before you begin. Based on the result, we recommend the right program and build a study plan at your level — whether you're a complete beginner or working toward HSK 6.

8. Is there an age limit, and do I need to bring my own textbooks?

There is no age limit — we welcome children, adults, and retirees, and the one-on-one format adapts to any age. Many of our students are over 50, 60, or 70, including learners turned away by universities because of their age — see learning Chinese in China at any age. You also don't need to bring any materials; KCEL provides all textbooks and learning resources.
