Why a Mandarin Summer at KCEL?
Looking for an immersive Chinese summer for your kids? Young Explorers gives children and teens a real Mandarin head start in Kunming — small-group classes grouped by level, three focused weeks of progress, and a hands-on taste of Chinese culture, in the studio and out in the city. After more than 25 years teaching in Kunming (Est. 1999), we know how young learners fall in love with the language: with friends, and through the culture behind it.
Kids Learn With Peers
Small groups of 3–6, split by HSK level, so your child is challenged at the right pace and makes friends who are learning right alongside them.
Real Progress in 3 Weeks
Two focused morning classes every weekday add up fast. A short, structured session builds real confidence — and a head start for the school year back home.
Culture, Not Just Class
Optional culture classes and teacher-led outings to Kunming's markets and sights turn a language course into a summer your child remembers.
Timed for the Summer Break
Both sessions land after school lets out across North America and Europe — easy to fit around a family trip to China.
Two Summer Sessions
Each session is three weeks of small-group morning classes, Monday to Friday. Book whichever fits your family's summer — or join both, back-to-back, for a full six weeks.

Local culture outings. A Chinese teacher takes the family out for three hours to Kunming's famous attractions and local markets — experiencing authentic local life while practicing the language in the real world. $90 USD per session for a family of 1 to 3 people.

Frequently Asked Questions
When are the 2027 summer sessions?
Two 3-week sessions: Session 1 runs July 5–23, 2027, and Session 2 runs July 26 – August 13, 2027. The dates are set so school is already out across North America and Europe. Book either session, or both back-to-back for six weeks.
What ages is the camp for?
The camp is built for kids and teens, ages 5–17. Children learn in small groups with classmates near their level. Tell us your children's ages when you enquire and we'll confirm the right grouping.
How are the classes organized, and what time do they run?
Kids learn in small groups of 3–6, split by HSK level so every child works at the right pace. Classes run Monday–Friday mornings, 8:30–10:15am — two 45-minute classes with a 15-minute break in between. For the rest of the morning, children can add an optional culture class or a local outing. Complete beginners are welcome; we place each child after a short, friendly level check.
What culture add-ons can my child do?
Two options, both optional. Culture classes (ages 5–17) — hands-on calligraphy, Chinese painting, tea ceremony, and Tai Chi in the studio, at $40 USD per class. Or a local culture outing — a Chinese teacher takes the family out for three hours to Kunming's attractions and markets to experience local life and practice the language, at $90 USD per session for a family of 1–3 people.
If I find the two classes a day aren't enough, can I add more?
Of course. You can add private 1-on-1 lessons on top of the two morning small-group classes — those extra 1-on-1 classes are billed at our standard 1-on-1 rate, not the small-group rate. And if you have more than one child, siblings can add further small-group classes together on top of the standard two. Tell us what you'd like and we'll build the schedule around it.
Does my child need any Chinese to start?
None — complete beginners are welcome. We do a brief level check for each child and place them in a group with classmates near their level. Heritage learners who already speak some Mandarin are grouped to keep the pace right for them.
Can the whole family join the outings?
Yes — the local culture outings are designed for families. A Chinese teacher accompanies you for the full three hours, and a session covers a family of 1 to 3 people for $90 USD. It's a relaxed way for parents and children to explore Kunming together and practice Chinese in the real world.
Do we need a visa?
For a 3-week summer stay, most families visit on a standard tourist (L) visa — no student visa is needed for a stay this short. We're happy to provide a letter confirming your child's enrollment if your visa application needs it. Tell us your dates and we'll advise.
