Why a Small Group?
KCEL taught small group classes for years before the pandemic. When COVID disrupted in-person cohorts, we paused them and focused on 1-on-1 instruction — and that's been our main offering ever since. Demand for groups is now strong enough to bring them back, so we're opening our first post-pandemic Small Group cohort in September 2026 — for students who want focused instruction without the cost of fully private study, and who learn faster with classmates to practice with.
Real Speaking Time
With just 3–6 students, every learner gets multiple turns each class. No hiding at the back of a 20-person classroom. Bring questions, get answers in the same session.
Lower Cost Than Private
$13 per class — about 20% below our standard $15 private rate. KCEL teaching quality and a structured curriculum, shared with classmates near your level.
One Cohort, Five Months
You study on a clear September-to-January pathway with classmates near your level. Progress compounds when the group follows the same structured curriculum.
Built-In Practice Partners
Your group becomes your study circle. Practice tones over coffee, share flashcards, plan weekend trips in Mandarin. Immersion happens inside and outside class.

You keep the same Monday–Friday 9–11am slot. As more students enroll, they may join your group along the way; pricing stays the same. You only stand to gain.

Frequently Asked Questions
When does the cohort start and end?
This is KCEL's first post-pandemic Small Group cohort. It runs from September 1, 2026 through end of January 2027 — five months of structured study with classmates at a similar level. Each weekday morning has two 45-minute classes back-to-back (9:00–11:00am with a 15-minute break in between).
How long is each class, and how many total?
Each class is 45 minutes. You take two classes back-to-back every weekday morning, separated by a 15-minute break — 90 minutes of instruction per morning. Over 5 months that's roughly 200 classes in total.
How many students will be in my group?
Minimum 3 students, maximum 6. We keep groups small on purpose — beyond 6, individual speaking time drops sharply. If a cohort fills past 6, we open a second parallel group.
What materials do you use? Will I make HSK progress?
We use the standard HSK textbook series as the foundation, grouped by level. Before the cohort starts, you'll take a brief level assessment so we can place you in the right group. By the end of five months, most students advance at least one full HSK level — beginners typically reach HSK 2 or 3, intermediate learners often hit HSK 4.
What happens if KCEL can't recruit 3 students for my cohort?
You're upgraded to 1-on-1 private instruction at the same $13 per class rate, no extra charge, no schedule change. As more students enroll over time, they may join your group; you'd transition into a small group class without any pricing change. You only stand to gain.
How much does it cost in total?
$13 per 45-minute class × ~200 classes = roughly $2,600 for the full 5-month program, plus a one-time $100 registration fee. That's about $540 per month for 90 minutes of intensive Mandarin every weekday.
Do I need a student visa?
Yes. The cohort is 5 months long, so you'll need an X2 student visa. KCEL provides a School Admission Letter (录取通知书) and program schedule to support your visa application at no extra charge. Apply at least 6–8 weeks before September 1 to allow time for visa processing.
What Chinese level do I need?
None — complete beginners are welcome. We assess your level before the cohort starts and group you with classmates near your level. Most groups span a narrow level range so the pace works for everyone.
Can I take the afternoon off, or are there afternoon classes too?
The Small Group Class is mornings only — Monday–Friday 9–11am (two 45-min classes with a break). Afternoons and weekends are yours: self-study, exploring Kunming, weekend trips around Yunnan, or remote work.
What if I want to start in September but prefer 1-on-1?
That's also available — our standard 1-on-1 program runs year-round at $15 per class with a fully flexible schedule. Apply and mention you'd prefer private instruction; we'll set you up.
