Considering a Kunming University Program?
Yunnan University, Yunnan Normal University, and Kunming University of Science and Technology all offer Chinese language programs for international students — but they require semester-long commitments, HSK 4+ for degree tracks, and CSC scholarship timelines. Many students study at KCEL first to build the foundation (and HSK level) needed to apply. See our complete guide to Kunming university programs, tuition, and scholarships.

Which course should I choose if I'm a complete beginner?
If you're starting from zero, we recommend Group Classes or 1-on-1 Private Classes as your foundation. Group classes are social and cost-effective, while 1-on-1 classes let you move at your own pace with personalized attention. Both cover the same beginner fundamentals (pinyin, basic characters, survival phrases).
If you want to accelerate, consider our Intensive Mandarin Program — 4-6 weeks of daily immersion gets beginners to HSK 1 level (300-500 characters).
Next step: Tell us your goals and we'll recommend the perfect course.
How long does it take to reach HSK level?
HSK levels are the official Chinese proficiency standard recognized internationally. Timeline depends on your starting level and study intensity:
- HSK 1 (150 words): 4-8 weeks of intensive study or 3-4 months of regular classes
- HSK 2 (300 words): 2-3 months intensive or 6-9 months regular
- HSK 3 (600 words): 4-6 months intensive or 12-18 months regular
- HSK 4 (1200 words): 8-12 months intensive or 2-3 years regular
Our HSK Preparation Program is specifically designed to accelerate your progress with proven test strategies and certified instructors.

What's the difference between 1-on-1, 1-on-2, and group classes?
1-on-1 Private Classes: 100% of the teacher's attention. Best for intensive learning, rapid progress, or specific goals (business Chinese, exam prep). Most flexible scheduling. Price: $500-700/month.
1-on-2 Classes: A balance between personal attention and cost savings. Great for couples, friends, or colleagues learning together. Same curriculum flexibility as 1-on-1 but 20-30% cheaper. Price: $300-400/person/month.
Group Classes: Learn with 4-8 classmates in a social environment. Ideal for building friendships, practicing conversation, and enjoying the peer dynamic. Most affordable option. Price: $200-300/person/month.

Can I combine language classes with culture courses?
Absolutely! Many students combine morning Chinese classes with our culture activities in the afternoon. This is especially popular with our Culture & Travel Program, where you get:
- Morning 1-on-1 Chinese lessons
- Afternoon cultural activities (calligraphy, TCM, cooking, temples, museums)
- Evening free time to explore Kunming
Culture activities reinforce what you learn in class and make your experience unforgettable.

What visa do I need to study at KCEL?
Most students come on one of two paths:
- Already in China on a tourist visa: Many students study at KCEL without switching visa types. If your stay is under 6 months and you're already in China on a tourist visa, you can enroll and start classes — contact us to confirm based on your situation.
- X2 Student Visa: If you're applying from outside China, KCEL issues a School Admission Letter which you use to apply for an X2 visa at a Chinese consulate in your home country. We do not issue JW202 forms.
For study beyond 6 months or other visa types, please contact us — requirements vary by nationality and program length.
Questions about your situation? Get in touch and we'll advise →
Can I extend, pause, or adjust my schedule mid-program?
Yes — KCEL is built around flexibility. Life happens, plans change, and we accommodate that:
- Extend your program: Want an extra week or two because you're making great progress? No problem. Just let us know and we'll extend your schedule.
- Take a break: Need a week off to travel or handle personal matters? You can pause classes and resume without losing your progress or your teacher.
- Adjust your schedule: Class times can be shifted to fit your evolving plans — whether that's a day trip, a work call, or a late arrival.
We're a small, personalized school — not a rigid institution. If you have a scheduling question, just ask and we'll work it out.
