Chinese Student Visa Guide: X1 & X2 Explained | KCEL

KCEL visa support: KCEL issues a School Admission Letter (录取通知书) for X2 visa applications — short-term study under 6 months. We do not issue JW202 forms or support X1 (long-term degree) visas. If you plan to study Chinese at KCEL, the X2 is the correct visa type for most students.

X1 vs X2: Which Student Visa Do You Need?

China issues two types of study visas for international students learning Chinese:

Visa Type Study Duration Who Needs It Issued By
X1 (long-term) 6 months or more Degree students, long-term language programs at universities Chinese university with JW202 form
X2 (short-term) Under 6 months Language school students, short-term immersion programs Language school admission letter

Most KCEL students use the X2 visa. Whether you're coming for a 2-week intensive, a 3-month immersion program, or a semester-length language course, you'll apply for an X2 using KCEL's School Admission Letter as your supporting document.

X2 Visa Application: Step-by-Step

Once you've enrolled at KCEL, the X2 application process follows these steps:

  1. Enroll at KCEL — Complete your enrollment and program selection. KCEL will prepare your School Admission Letter (录取通知书) in both English and Chinese.
  2. Receive your admission letter — KCEL sends the letter digitally. You'll use the original (or a certified copy) as supporting documentation for your visa application.
  3. Locate your nearest Chinese consulate — Apply in your home country or a third country where you hold legal residency. The consulate must have jurisdiction over your area.
  4. Gather your documents — See the checklist below.
  5. Submit your application — In-person at the consulate or through an authorized visa application service centre (available in most major cities).
  6. Collect your visa — Standard processing is 4 business days; express service is available in most locations for 2-day or next-day processing.

X2 Visa Document Checklist

  • Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity; at least one blank visa page)
  • Completed Chinese Visa Application Form (available at consulate or online via COVA)
  • One recent passport-sized photo (white background, full face, no hat)
  • Original KCEL School Admission Letter (original + photocopy)
  • Photocopy of the passport's photo page
  • Visa application fee (varies by country and processing speed — check your local consulate)

Some consulates may request additional documents such as travel insurance, bank statements, or proof of accommodation. Check the specific requirements for the consulate in your country before your appointment.

X2 Visa Processing Time

Service Type Processing Time
Standard 4 business days
Express 2 business days
Rush (where available) 1 business day

Tip: Apply at least 3–4 weeks before your program start date to account for consulate processing time, postal return, and any unexpected document requests.

X1 Visa: Long-Term Study at a University

If you're enrolling in a full-year or multi-year Chinese language program at a Chinese university (such as Yunnan University or Yunnan Normal University), you'll need an X1 visa. The X1 application requires a JW202 form, which is issued by the university — not by KCEL.

X1 visa document requirements (university programs):

  • Passport photo page (valid for at least 6 months)
  • Highest academic certificate and official transcript
  • Foreign physical examination form (with photo stamp)
  • Certificate of no criminal record from your home country
  • JW202 form issued by the Chinese university
  • One inch passport photo (E-photo format)
  • Study plan or personal statement

X1 processing time: 20 business days. Apply early — many universities require document submission 2–3 months before program start.

Extending Your Stay: X2 Visa Renewal

If you want to continue studying at KCEL beyond your X2 visa period, you have two options:

  1. Exit and re-enter China — Travel to a nearby country (many students visit Thailand, Vietnam, or Laos) and apply for a new X2 visa at the local Chinese consulate using a new KCEL admission letter.
  2. Apply for a visa extension in China — The Exit and Entry Administration Bureau (出入境管理局) in Kunming can extend X2 visas in some cases. KCEL staff can advise on current extension policies, which change periodically.

Common Questions

Can I enter China on a tourist visa (L visa) and study at KCEL?

Technically, China requires a study visa for language school enrollment. In practice, many short-term visitors study Chinese while on tourist visas. For programs of any meaningful length, applying for the X2 is the correct and recommended approach. KCEL can advise you based on your specific situation.

Does KCEL help with visa paperwork?

Yes. Once you enroll, KCEL prepares your School Admission Letter and can assist with understanding the process. We cannot submit applications on your behalf — that must be done at your local Chinese consulate.

How long is the X2 visa valid?

X2 visas are typically single-entry and valid for 90 days from the date of issue, with a stay period that matches your program length (up to 180 days within China). Validity terms vary by consulate and country of application.
