HSK Level Standard

The Chinese proficiency test (HSK) is an international standardized test for the Chinese proficiency of non-native speakers of Chinese (including foreigners, overseas Chinese and ethnic Chinese).

HSK is designed and developed by Beijing language and culture university Chinese proficiency test center. It includes basic Chinese proficiency test [HKS(basic)], Primary and secondary Chinese proficiency test[HSK(elementary and secondary)] and advanced Chinese proficiency test [HSK(advanced)]. HSK is regularly held in China and overseas every year. Those who meet the required test scores will be awarded the corresponding HSK certificate. China's ministry of education has set up the national HSK examination committee, which is in charge of the HSK examination and issues HSK certificates.

HSK (level 1) tests the candidate's ability to use Chinese in daily life. It corresponds to the first level of the international standard for Chinese proficiency and Common reference framework for European languages (CEF), level A1. Candidates who have passed HSK (level 1) can understand and use some very simple Chinese words and sentences to meet specific communication needs and have the ability to further learn Chinese.

HSK (level 2) tests the candidate's ability to use Chinese in daily life. It corresponds to the second level of the international standard for Chinese proficiency and Common reference framework for European languages (CEF), level A2. Candidates who have passed HSK (level 2) will be able to communicate in simple and direct Chinese on familiar daily topics, reaching the primary level of Chinese excellence.

HSK (level 3) tests the candidate's Chinese proficiency. It corresponds to the third level of the international standard for Chinese proficiency and Common reference framework for European languages (CEF), level B1. Candidates who have passed HSK (level 3) can complete basic communication tasks in life, study and work in Chinese. When traveling in China, they can handle most of the communication tasks you encounter.

HSK (level 4) tests the candidate's Chinese proficiency. It corresponds to the fourth level of the international standard for Chinese proficiency and Common reference framework for European languages (CEF), level B2. Candidates who have passed HSK (level 4) can talk over a wide range of topics in Chinese and communicate fluently with native speakers.

HSK (level 5) tests the candidate's Chinese proficiency. It corresponds to the fifth level of the international standard for Chinese proficiency and Common reference framework for European languages (CEF), level C1. Candidates who have passed HSK (level 5) can read Chinese newspapers and magazines, enjoy Chinese movies and TV programs, and make a relatively complete speech in Chinese.

HSK (level 6) tests the candidate's Chinese proficiency. It corresponds to the sixth level of the international standard for Chinese proficiency and Common reference framework for European languages (CEF), level C2. Candidates who have passed the HSK (level 6) can easily understand the information in Chinese they have heard or read, and express themselves fluently in Chinese, either orally or in writing.
